The 300 men each carried a trumpet, an empty pitcher, and a torch inside the pitcher. At Gideon's signal, they all simultaneously blew their trumpets, smashed their pitchers to reveal the torches, and shouted, "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!". The resulting chaos and terror caused the Midianite soldiers to turn on and kill each other, leading to their defeat.
The call to battle: An oppressive Midianite army was vast, with their numbers compared to locusts and sand. Gideon was chosen by God to lead the Israelites against them.
Reducing the army: God told Gideon that his initial army of 32,000 men was too large, as the victory needed to be clearly God's, not Israel's own. He first sent home those who were afraid, leaving 10,000 men. Then, he further reduced the army to the final 300 men based on how they drank water from a stream—those who scooped it in their hands were chosen.
The attack: Gideon and his 300 men surrounded the Midianite camp at night. Following God's instructions, they held trumpets in one hand and torches hidden inside clay jars in the other. The victory: At Gideon's signal, his men simultaneously blew their trumpets, smashed their jars to reveal the torches, and shouted, "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!". The overwhelming confusion from the noise and light caused the Midianites to turn on each other in panic, and the survivors fled. The aftermath: Gideon's small force achieved a miraculous victory, rescuing Israel from Midianite oppression through divine intervention.
