David's Harp Serenade

1 Samuel 16:23

Whenever the spirit from God came on Saul, David would take up his lyre and play. Then relief would come to Saul; he would feel better, and the evil spirit would leave him.

David played the harp for Saul because when an evil spirit tormented the king, the soothing music would calm him and relieve his distress. Saul's servants recommended finding a skilled harpist to comfort him during these episodes, and David was known for his ability to play the instrument. When David played, the evil spirit would depart, and Saul would feel refreshed and well.
